Changes for 2013

Learning opportunities in 2013 will be offered over a 5-week block, a term block or a semester (half a year).

School will be open from 8 am to 4 pm every day, courses will start at 9 am. Every LA will be based in a room that doubles as a homebase, that means that students will have a base to operate from as well.

Other changes to the schedule for 2013 include:

  • 6 colour slots instead of 7 (in 2012) - all classes are 3 hour classes; with some one hour courses and some 1 and 1/2 hour courses.
  • Wednesday is a HB day where all students are based with their HBLA to be supported in their learning, meet for one on one conversations, collaborate with others etc (still 2.30 finish to allow students to take part in the inter-school sport competitions.
  • Tuesday morning is a normal start, no late start as in 2012.
  • Every day is a HB meeting time at 10 am, after the first course slot.
  • No Sport afternoon/session in the schedule, we are offering more PE courses and are hoping to offer a range of extra curricular activities before school, after school and at lunchtime.

Jazz Band

678MUS
Matthew Davis

"The Jazz band is a practical course that focuses on ensemble playing and awareness, sight-reading and improvisation. Unlike most courses at UPT, this course is a year-long program, and requires considerable commitment outside of regular class times. Most of this course involves playing and performing as part of a group. Although not specifically designed as an 'NCEA' course, it is possible to complete a range of achievement standards at whichever level is appropriate for you. Students wanting to attain 'course endorsement' in music should also enroll in one of the NCEA music classes (levels 6, 7 or 8). Please talk to Matt if you have any questions or concerns about NCEA. 2013 is once again an exciting year for the UPT jazz band. We are once again planning on a short tour of the South Island in term 3, including making an appearance at the Blenheim Jazz Festival. This year the focus will be on having fun, developing tight ensemble work and general professionalism. This band also offers the opportunity for real student leadership, for those students that want to lead a band, arrange for an ensemble or organise events. With an ambitious program this year and a significant fundraising challenge ahead of us, students are expected to commit to the band (attending all rehearsals, meetings etc.) for the first three terms. Numbers on this course are limited, and this course is designed for students working at level 6 or above of the New Zealand Curriculum. You must come and see Matt if you are thinking about joining this course! This year we will begin our musical odyssey with an exploration of classic funk and fusion. We will draw inspiration from great artists such as Maceo Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Joe Zawinul, Mike Brecker, Weather Report, Sly and the Family Stone and Stevie Wonder to put together a set of tight, funkalicious grooves. We will be focusing on developing ensemble awareness, arranging, sight-reading, transcribing and improvisation skills. "

"This first term course is aimed at preparing yourself to complete a L2/3 Photography folio. We find out what we already know and work on a series of short projects to upskill your photo techniques. This project could involve, for example, documentary style with a real client/ issue focus such as creating a series of images for use by a charity, creating a narrative in film noir style, or light shadow glass- secret lives of objects. Following this independent project, you will be well prepared to begin your folio. Mechanics for experts

8PHY
Emily B

Physics is hard, boring, irrelevant to everyday life and nothing new has been discovered for hundreds of years. At least that's what people tell me. If these were true I would never have wanted to research and teach physics and astronomy. This course is about how physics makes sense, is new and exciting and applicable to everything we do everyday. Want to know more about the experiments at CERN? The ultimate fate of the universe? How physicists invent ground-breaking medical devices? Then I invite you to study 13 Physics where you can learn not just facts and equations, but acquire the skills to understand, evaluate, and maybe even be a part of the 'next-big-thing' in science. "This semester we will be running a variety of courses. These include running the Christcurch Half Marathon 21.1 km (Queens Birthday weekend) in under a specified time. This can be done in combination with the training programme (3.2 90740) but will be looking at this later this semester. Along with the practical. Students complete their own definition of what hauora means to them. They record and log their progress over their 10 week training programme. Then they evaluate how their hauora was effected by participation in this programme. Reference and understanding of ex phys (level 2) and principles and methods of training, plus a background in hauora understanding are essential (gained through Health or Physical Education) for completing this standard. Towards the end of term one and moving onto term two we will be looking at Teaching Yr 7and 8s. Students will research what encourages and discourages physical activity for early teenagers. They will create a couple of lessons that will promote physical activity and evaluate how successful they were and what they would change for next time. Assessment is an essay. Useful to have some experience in critical thinking and an understanding of leadership will be useful to have completed level 2 skill learning and physiological skills (90435 2.4) and some leadership work in level 2(2.7 90438). Students have the ability to work independently in standards we will be working on critical thinking and going over concepts necessary for the standards. We will begin looking at biomechanics standard towards the end of term 2. This standard gives amazing feedback after a motorskill breakdown. For example a football kick we can look and calculate at the speed on contact of the ball. Speed of limbs after contact speed of ball on contact. "
